OpenVox DAHDI Linux Compatibility Test
To verify the suitability of OpenVox cards for recent Linux releases and newer kernels, we recently tested DAHDI driver adaptation, card detection, and live calls on Ubuntu, openSUSE, and Debian. We also performed compatibility testing on CentOS 7.9. Verification has been completed for all tested environments, and all tests passed.
1. Test Objectives
The tests focused on driver installation, hardware detection, and calling functionality on recent Linux releases, providing a reference for customers selecting systems and planning deployments.
The following operating systems were covered:
| Operating System | Test Scope | Result |
|---|---|---|
| CentOS | DAHDI driver compilation and installation, analog card detection, channel configuration, and calls | Passed |
| Ubuntu | DAHDI driver compilation and installation, card detection, channel configuration, and calls | Passed |
| openSUSE | DAHDI driver compilation and installation, card detection, channel configuration, and calls | Passed |
| Debian | DAHDI driver compilation and installation, card detection, channel configuration, and calls | Passed |
Test Environment Version Tracking
The table below maintains a record of verified operating system and kernel combinations. Add a new row whenever a new operating system version is tested, the kernel is upgraded, or the test cards are changed, retaining all previous test results. Use cat /etc/os-release to check the operating system version and uname -r to check the currently running kernel version.
| Operating System | OS Version | Kernel Version | DAHDI Version | Cards Tested | Test Date | Test Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CentOS Linux | 7.9.2009 (Core) | 3.10.0-1160.119.1.el7.x86_64 | 3.4.0 (source and tools) | OpenVox A810P, OpenVox D430 | 2026-10-22 | Passed | Driver loading, card detection, and call verification completed |
| Ubuntu | 26.04.1 LTS | 7.0.0-38-generic | 3.4.0 | OpenVox A810P, OpenVox D430 | 2026-10-22 | Passed | Driver loading, card detection, and call verification completed |
| openSUSE | 16.0 | 6.12.0-160000.38-default | 3.4.0 | OpenVox A810P, OpenVox D430 | 2026-10-21 | Passed | Driver loading, card detection, and call verification completed |
| Debian | 13.7 (trixie) | 6.12.107+deb13-amd64 | 3.4.0 | OpenVox A810P, OpenVox D430 | 2026-10-21 | Passed | Driver adaptation, card detection, and call verification completed |
2. Driver and Card Compatibility Verification
We adapted the relevant drivers and adjusted the configuration to accommodate interface changes in newer Linux kernels, then verified operation using physical hardware.
Verification covered the following:
-
The DAHDI drivers could be compiled, installed, and loaded in the test environments.
-
The systems correctly detected the tested cards and their port types.
-
FXS and FXO analog channels were correctly detected and configured.
-
E1 digital links could be established and used by Asterisk.
-
Asterisk could load DAHDI channels and execute the corresponding dialplan rules.
3. Live Call Testing
After verifying the drivers and hardware, we performed live call tests to verify the complete call flow from the telephone endpoint through Asterisk to the remote end of the line.
| Test Item | Verification Scope | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Analog extension calls | Call initiation from an FXS telephone, ringing at the remote endpoint, and call answering | Passed |
| SIP integration | Integration between Asterisk and a PBX, and call establishment | Passed |
| Outbound calls over FXO lines | FXO line selection according to dialplan rules and successful call completion | Passed |
| Outbound calls over E1 digital lines | Digital line selection according to dialplan rules and successful call completion | Passed |
| Call audio | Two-way voice communication after the call was answered | Passed |
The tests also verified line selection using dialing prefixes. For example, prefix 8 selected a digital line, while prefix 9 selected an FXO line, supporting outbound calls in deployments with multiple line types.
4. Test Conclusions and Deployment Support
The tests demonstrate that after the required driver adaptation and configuration, the tested OpenVox cards can operate correctly and complete live calls on the CentOS, Ubuntu, openSUSE, and Debian operating system and kernel combinations listed in the version tracking table, within the card configurations and test scope recorded for each row.
For customers planning to use recent Linux releases, these results provide a practical basis for deployment. Before purchase, we can confirm a suitable driver adaptation plan based on the customer’s intended card model, operating system version, and kernel version. We can also provide support for driver installation, channel configuration, and call troubleshooting to help customers complete their deployments.
